    Default Question for conservative people

    Why are you conservative?

I ask because conservative values don't make any sense to me.

Might want to define conservative values first.

Hey baby, baby - why I'm I conservative? Why am I conservative?

Once I was a nice bloke like yourself, minding my own business, trusting in the goodness of others, then I got mugged by reality, mate.

I put the blame entirely on the shoulders of reality - some say the Devil made them do it - but, mate I blame reality.

I was mugged, mate, mugged by reality.

    And once mugged, twice shy.

Yes. What are these nonsensical conservative values? American ones?

Do you mean conservative politically? Socially? Religiously? Conservative in economic habits? I mean, there's all kinds of possible areas one can be conservative and not necessarily the same in other areas.

Alas no, but as I go for a walk at night, I notice the cats sitting in their windows looking at me. I slowly approach the window until only a pane of glass separates us.

Some of them hiss at me. Some of them play with me. And some of them ignore me.

Of course it is exactly the same on MBTI Central - I slowly approach the pane of glass on my new iMac until I know you are just on the other side. And some of you, alas, hiss at me. Some of you play with me. And some of you ignore me. Just like the window cats.

I haven't seen anyone with a nazi cat avatar but I expect to see a nazi cat staring back at me the next time I look in a window, separated by the merest pane of glass.

Of course you can be conservative in the sense of conserving what is good in your society.

Also innovation comes out of knowing what has come before - so innovation depends on conservatism.

Also conservatism can come from a revulsion at revolution.

We must never forget that revolutions eat their own children.

The German revolution ate twelve million of their own children, including six million Jews, over seven years.

The Russian, Chinese and Cambodian revolutions ate one hundred million of their own children, over seventy years.

And the American revolution could not forebear from eating its own children in the Civil War.

And the Islamic revolution is presently eating its own across the muslim world, particularly in Dafur.

So the first things conservatives conserve is the right to life.

The next thing conservative conserve is their own particular civilization.

And our civilization stretches from Ancient Greece to this moment in the Noosphere.

And is called Western Civilization. And the name comes from the words, "Western Europe".

It includes Judaism, Ancient Greek philosophy, Rome, Christianity, the Rennaisance and the Enlightenment.

And it has led to everything we take for granted today in West: literacy, prosperity, political freedom, the separation of Church and State, the equality of women and men, the protection of children, science and the internet.

This is our civilization and it is unique and certainly worth conserving.
