It's overcast here in Clayton, and the wind's kicking up. Looks like rain, and soon.

Would you really chase me with a pitchfork?

The last hurricane I saw, I went to my parents' house in Fort Myers to ride it out. The back of the house was lined with glass doors that opened up to their pool. The day that it passed over, I woke up at about 5am because the glass was rattling so loudly. We didn't board up those glass doors, which probably wasn't too smart, so I put my face up against the glass and watched that hurricane for at least an hour. It really was exciting hearing the wind whip around the house at over 100mph, knowing that, if I opened the door, the house might collapse.

We sat through 90-100 mph winds with Fran in '96. It was horrible. I had a little confidence because our old house had weathered the monster cat 4 Hazel in the 1950s and that storm killed people all the way up into Canada.

I wish I could have been there. Sounds like a blast!

You do know that most hurricane deaths are flood related, right?

NC became a black spot in space. No light to be seen through the whole Piedmont. We were without power for 4 or 5 days.

I know. I can't understand why people - unless it's an emergency - would go out driving or walking in that mess. The storm surge alone is deadly, much less flying objects and downed live powerlines.

Oh yeah, the aftermath is really boring, especially going without power.

I don't get that either. It's not like hurricanes creep up on anyone. You know days in advance, unless you live in a cave. It's not like tornadoes, which do scare me a little. Growing up in the midwest, I've had a couple close calls.
