You're giving them the wrong body language. Give them a wide eyed glare and keep your eyes on them when you're wanting to be left alone. Squint your eyes and pay only a little attention to them when you want to pet them. Feels kinda backwards but it's the difference between a threatening stance and a relaxed stance.

I accept no responsibility, what so ever, for the fact that I exist; I do, however, accept full responsibility for what I do while I exist.

Off topic, but I just acknowledged your user-name. Interesting choice. I never known cats to be very physical. Maybe, it's just the cats I've had experience with.

There is a social variability to most domesticated cats, but the basic premise to dealing with them is consistently using appropriate body language to communicate your willingness or lack there of for social/physical contact. You can squint and yowl at a siamese all you want; the most it will get you is a few red stripes across your face. On the other hand, make wide eyed glares and do the angry growl and all the little kitties will think twice before attempting to approach you. Actually, it's this simplicity that makes cats pretty easy to manage once you get the hang of it. You're basically saying, "come here," or, "fuck off," and you don't have to be PC about it .
