    Question Are you bi-racial/ethnic/whatever?

    I was listening to a discussion today on opb about how portland, oregon is pretty gosh darn white-washed. i'm a transplant here (portland) and am half white and half mexican. i found that in california, where i grew up, i never fit in completely with one side or the other, socially or even in my extended family. all types were around me but where i lived and went to school was mostly white, closely followed by mexican, then asian, then black.

    i don't fit in that much here in portland much either. the mexicans are looked down on as illegal immigrants (i never heard so much disdain for mexicans in my life). the whites are scared of offending anyone not white, trying to be pc or whatever, and being totally stupid about it.

    who's bi or multi-racial?
    what are your experiences?

    i dunno if i posted this in the right place, it didn't seem to fit anywhere else.

    I am biracial.

    Have Polish Jew, half Korean.

    Luckily, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, so I've never really had much of a problem with my bi-ethnic background.

    was born and raised in orange, ca and i dunno if i would say i had problems, just never quite fit in. but that may have nothing to do with my ethnicity, i'm not really sure.

    i'm sure oc is more white than la, but not more than portland.

    OC = AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

    I lived in Colorado for a couple of years and I definitely had to adjust to the abundance of whiteness.

    I'm not big into having ethnic or cultural pride and affiliations.

    I never get enough of that. Whenever there are more Hs than As, all I can think about is having a Coke after a hard day at work.

    btw, I've got something to which the amount of whiteness involved, adjustment is necessary...In my...Nevermind.

    I'm super white (75% British, 25% Irish), and therefor not bi-racial in the slightest. I live in whats probably the "whitest" city in Canada (although that said probably at least a third to one half of my classmates are from asia/africa/middle east). It doesn't make any difference to me though... how I've felt in terms of "fitting in" has never been relevant to the fact that I'm an ethnic majority, it's had to do with my own inner thoughts and self esteem.

    Is anyone here a majority in their greater area but a minority within their own community? One of my cousins (who like me is of British and Irish ethnicity) is the only white person in her class, and the only person within her group of friends with straight parents. They live in Cabbagetown in Toronto, wich is right beside the Gayborhood (Church and Wellesly), and there are also tonnes of immigrants/children of immigrants. This has no effect on anything at all, socially... it's totally normal for them and myself because it is how they/I are growing up. They're schools also have classes in Chinese and Spanish due to the demand (as well as the standard French of course), which is really cool. They could learn about the entire world just within their circle of friends.

    I'm not bi-racial, but I still think my experiences/family's experiences are relevant, so don't mind me...
