    It depends on where you're looking. If you listen to the radio, then of course a lot of the music will be less creative due to its mass popularity. (That, and the fact that it often relies on a strong beat, not the melody or lyrics. People listen to these artists when they're drinking and partying.) But there are many talented artists that have niche followings--and are even surprisingly popular (such as Circa Survive, Periphery, and Noah Gundersen). This is just my personal opinion, but I think that even some popular musicians (such as Florence Welch) have a lot of artistic merit.

    To say that all modern music has declined is a sweeping generalization.

    As others have said in here, stay out of the mainstream and you will no longer have this problem.
