@Society: thanks for the comment about my Ni/firsthand posts. I do wish there was more room for that kind of thing on this site overall (including but not just about Ni) without things going ugly and batshit as they so often do here. And I don't hate your guts or anything about you - I don't really know who you are.

Could we get a layman's description?

I will do my best. Baguazhang is a form of martial arts originating in China. It is rare in comparison to many other styles and is akin to Xingyi and Tai Chi. It translates into English as Eight Trigrams in that it was originally designed to fight 8 opponents at one time. Traditionally, Bagua is circular in fashion but certain families of the Islamic Hui people of China combined it with some of their own fighting systems to form a linear style, which is the style I mostly practice. Bagau also places an emphasis on the use of particular weapons such as the ring dagger, deer hook sword, chain whip, cane, fighting staff and various types of swords. I'm also trained to fight with a Bowie knife, but my favorite thing remains the form itself. According to a prominent practioner and friend of my teacher, "The "Linear Form" from is the longest and most energetic of all martial arts forms..."

Bagua is often called "The Art Of Over-kill" and Linear Bagua is the utmost form of it in that regard, making use of many dim-mak strikes powered by fa-jing or "explosive energy". So, I spend a lot of time memorizing pressure points and perfecting strikes. Baguazhang, when compared to more external styles, doesn't appear flashy, but it is highly effective. The Avatar from the Last Air Bender is based on Bagua. That is why I always say that my type is WIND. It's an inside joke for me! A movie that features Bagua is Jet Li's, The One and a more recent one is Ip Man: The Grand Master.

Traditionally, Linear Bagua is taught after Classical Circular Bagau. Both aerobic and anaerobic exercises are incorporated into linear Bagua, so that we gain endurance and explosive instant power. If a person practices Bagua daily and eats, at least mostly healthy, that person will be fit, strong and flexible.

Like any art, the more one practices, the better one becomes.

I hope I did all right putting it into lay men's terms
