    Default Check your toothpaste

Seems lax standards in China have contributed to the contamination of another product: toothpaste laced with anti-freeze ingredients. The FDA recommends that toothpaste made in China be discarded. My question is how do you tell? Many brands are redistributed by companies with no indicator of country of origin of the product.

Just read the article completely. If there are more than three or four affected brands, a list should be available through at least one news source.

But does that really mean we know exactly which brands are affected? As international as our trade is, can we be certain that it is ONLY those three brands? I've looked at toothpaste tubes and some only say "Distributed by" on them. Look back at the Melamine problem in pet food. See where it all spread to and how difficult it was to track? And if you think that they can track down all the affected supplies, look at all the problems the government had with the Atlanta lawyer infected with the treatment-resistant strain of TB and how easily he managed to evade the established processes. Just because they say they know, doesn't always mean they're being truthful; They may be making that claim if only to calm the public so the public isn't as aware of how widespread the problem is. And China's knee-jerk reaction to put that minister to death under whose management these things happened really don't address the problems; I think it only compounds the problem. But anyhow, I'm just saying we need to think of the wider implications that something like this has.

I recall that Nutro identified affected pet foods immediately and definitively.

Breadth of trade doesn't cause ignorance of one's suppliers. If connections can be traced to this or another suspect source, American consumers will be notified.

Wider implications? No matter how modern and benign it may be portrayed as, China is still run by the backwards, corrupt, totalitarian Politburo.

Probably, but I hardly think backwards, corrupt, totalitarian Politburo's have a monopoly on fucking up people's health. Note BSE, for example. Oh, and we might consider the the fact that ~40 million Americans have no health insurance. Lets hope those people don't use this toothpaste, eh?

Yes, but not having health insurance is hardly as damaging to health as Mao's Great Leap Forward was. That's the thing about backwards, corrupt, totalitrian Politburo's, they'll put anti-freeze ingredients in your toothpaste or put you and your family in front of a firing line.
A criticism that can be brought against everything ought not to be brought against anything.

A police state stuffing industrial chemicals into consumables is somehow comparable to a free market that does not deliver, free of charge, the gamut of affordable, modern medicines to every resident?

I wouldn't worry, Lee. Langrenus is probably a little vexed over NHS having put him on a waiting list for a toothache.

The pinky lefty Western European socialist in me can quite easily make such a comparison. Also - the British stereotype notwithstanding - my teeth are fine thanks (but my heart is warmed by your concern.)

I will say again, mistakes/failings such as this are not the preserve of nasty Communist regimes. I am also greatly amused by the evolution of the thread. Your first post referred quite rightly to lax standards - now we've moved on to a "police state stuffing industrial chemicals into consumables".

As a brief aside - no state (as far as I'm aware) delivers comprehensive medical care for free. In the UK case my monthly pay statements make this fact abundantly clear.

Ok, we've covered toothpaste, free market, communism, healthcare, and socialism. What we need now is Nazism and general fascism, and I think that'll complete the cycle, eh?

lol...I must admit I came nowhere close to predicting the course this thread would follow when I first read the title all those hours ago. Dental care products are clearly deeply rooted in the prevailing political systems of our day
