Starve them to death, you'll feel better:

I wouldn't say that's more hygienic than Mr Miyagi's way.

Even Mr. Miyagi couldn't do it Mr. Miyagi's way. Maybe I'll have the karate kid's beginner luck.

Ok fellow Life Hackers (yes I'm a dork, I'm taking medication) I have a question.

And @kyuuei this kind of goes back to your workout/eating hacks thread.

So as far as food is concerned I buy in bulk, cook in bulk, and store in single or double servings (unless I'm feeding a crowd).

I'll do this with smoothies, and I add lemon or lime juice so they stay fresh longer (or so I've heard).

My question is, does this work, and how long does it keep?

I'm currently drinking a smoothie that's 4 days old, haha. It doesn't smell or taste weird. So I'll let you know if I get dysentery.

^ Lemon will extend the life of it--but not by much.. Keeping it towards the bottom of the fridge, covered, with some citrus, it's actually quite fine. (Think of juices and salads and how long they last in the fridge.. that'll give you a perception of how long it'll last.) It does break down a bit faster than juice or salad/fruit because it's all sliced up and stuff, but it's fine. The lemon creates a more acidic environment.. that + the cold of the fridge makes it all frowny-faced for bacteria for a while.

@kyuuei @johnnyyukon I've heard that you can keep smoothies for over a month if you freeze them. Planning on trying that out at some point this week.

Yeah smoothies will generally keep. I'd blanch the greens so they hold up a bit better in the freezer, but I freeze anything and everything.

It would be better to take all the making for the smoothie and freeze in single serving packages. Then make them fresh as you need. You don't have the hassle of measuring and chopping every day but everything will ready to go (most smoothies have frozen fruit anyway).

I like to rock n' roll all night and *part* of every day. I usually have errands... I can only rock from like 1-3.

I'd seen this suggestion before -- much more frequently than the suggestion to freeze the finished smoothie. Why is that? Is the consistency wrong if you freeze the finished smoothie?

It could be and depending on what else is getting added (protein powder comes to mind) they could end up funky. I would certainly try both and see how I felt about the end product.
