    I find them useful:
    1) To hide actual spoilers from movies or books, or to hide the punchlines of jokes
    2) To improve loading time when several videos are posted in one post
    3) When I want to fully quote a long post without breaking it up, so it won't take up so much page space
    4) To add drama to a funny post

However, I find they can be over-used and annoying at times.

I ONLY like them for actual spoilers in threads like Game of Thrones or Hannibal. I started scrolling through that thread without realizing I hadn't seen the latest episode and caught a few spoilers, but most everyone in there uses them for a few days after the showing. So I like that.

Anything else, I don't get it. Well I kinda do (load time, does it cut down load time? jokes? don't get it).

Don't get me wrong - I think they can be quite useful. They're just overused to the point where it's irritating.

No you aren't alone. It's fine in places they belong (actual spoiler material) but they're really irritating when overused. I rarely click on them to begin with.
I like to rock n' roll all night and *part* of every day. I usually have errands... I can only rock from like 1-3.

I thought you of all people would appreciate the allure of the skillfully concealed.

Aside from the obvious uses, it's also another way to control information dissemination on a 2D page and emulate RL conversation. Adds interactivity, creates timing/pauses in the information, etc.
^I do see it as practical for the obvious uses (lots of text/media) - but yeah, they can add a certain element of comedic timing. Didn't know how to explain that. You've articulated it well, I think. Emulates the sort of RL-pause for reflection/delivery.

Comedy takes some degree of actual wit/talent/skill though, not simply framing a punchline the same way.. constantly.

Overall, I feel like their practical use makes up for any overuse.

The people who occasionally use them or use them cleverly - I like. People who use them regularly and say, have in their sig - no.. Being selective is key.
