Default why are glasses associated with being smart?

I mean i get that now you do a lot of reading and your eyes become worn. but before that how is being blind=to being smart. like sages who were blind they couldn't see but people regarded them as geniuses. And if you lost your glasses for 50 years you wouldn't be perceived as smart because you wouldn't be able to read and people equate smart people with knowing facts and being well versed in current events. so basically you can be smart without glasses or with glasses, so that association doesn't make sense.

Welllllll--- before electricity was everywhere, scholars had to work REALLY hard to study and read and write as much as they did. Most of the "great thinkers" we know today (who are from way back when) probably needed glasses pretty early on in their lives, and were probably almost blind by the time they died (if they lived long enough).

I don't know if this is the answer-- but it makes sense to me as a Medievalist

It's not so much that reading and writing made one's vision bad, its that people with poor vision who needed to read and write alot bothered to get it corrected once glasses were available, while people engaged in other activities didn't need to.
