Historically people with poor eyesight (particularly myopia) were probably pushed into intellectual pursuits because they're not very good at other things compared to someone with normal visual acuity. People with myopia don't need glasses to read a book, they need glasses for everything else. Hundreds of years ago a person with poor eyesight would have been encouraged to become a scholar or a jeweller or something else where the work involved didn't require distance vision. Broadly speaking the same holds true today, I think.

Myopia can also be caused by lots of reading.

Apparently, even from this thread, there are a bunch of different perspectives from which glasses could be associated with smart people stuff, mostly reading. Smart people stuff causes glasses, glasses cause smart people stuff, or glasses and smart people stuff are simply correlated. Like any 'stereotype,' it's been subjected to a feedback loop that perpetuates it.

I have 20/10 vision. I'm probably dumb as hell.

Here, also check out TVTropes, the best source for anything ever.

I was a super nerd in high school, and I am quite myopic (-5.5), therefore it must be true! :tongue1:.

Others have already said more or less what I was going to contribute. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a slight passing idea or trend a few individuals noticed way back when, then decided to make it into a trope to put on tv/movies. The public saw the trope, it fit a perspective to them, and poof! A stereotype is born.

I think there is a correlation between reading and intelligence. And by nature reading is a fine focus endeavour so if you have blurry vision you will need glasses to read. OTOH, if you don't need glasses to read, you can get away with moderately poor vision before you have to bother with corrective lenses.

Thus you end up with a higher proportion of readers with glasses than non-readers with glasses. If readers in general are more intelligent as a group, the association between intelligence and glasses can form, although there is no real correlation.

Not all glasses require you to have corrective lenses. As a matter of fact the "display" frames simply have plastic for lenses. Perhaps you can acquire this attribute (the look), when it suits your fancy, by purchasing a frame you find to your liking. Leverage this increased social value (situational) to expand your social networks and access to higher value mates. Build on these and proceed with your plan for world domination/happiness etc.

Some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age.
