Default Do you care if one is a contradictory person?

Humans are not perfect, so why does it matter if people contradict?

It's common to know that self-interest is the major motivation, is it not?

    Depends -

Does it lead to the conclusion that they're lying? In that case, I care.

If they're simply adjusting their POV over time, it's not a huge deal.

I like consistency within a person, so it does bother me if they act in different ways depending on who they are with or if they think people won't find out about it. I don't mind people adjusting their point of view over time, but I'd rather have it verbalized than not if they are close to me. I don't have any patience for being lied to.

Eh, not if they are internally consistent. It's fine if they *appear* contrary to the expectations of the norm, everybody does when you scratch their surface. But, people who are truly contradictory can be quite annoying.

My first reaction is that inconsistency doesn't really bother me. It seems like a lot of times people make a much bigger deal out of this than it needs to be (e.g., getting all upset that a person says things that appear logically inconsistent for example). Humans are emotional and complex beings that often don't understand themselves very well or why they do what they do. It seems perfectly normal to me for individuals to be confusing, have or hold contradictory ideas or thoughts at any given time and to behave in inconsistent ways.

However this kind of inconsistency bothers me a lot. It is intentional inconsistency that is predictable, indicative of insincerity and is an integrity issue.

And that I have no patience for either.

I think contradictory behaviors are awesome, because there's always amazing new things to challenge and discover when we explore the endless spectra with all possibilities everywhere!

I've taken a lot of flak on other sites for being "contradictory"--I mean real hostility has been shown, as if I'm somehow an idiot who's blind to herself, or am being intentionally deceitful.

I can't help it. I'm an inherently contradictory person. I've have many sides, many facets, and if I report on one side of myself, it's not fully representational. You're going to see other sides of me arise from time to time. I try new things, my viewpoint changes over time, and my self image shifts depending on my mood. It doesn't mean I'm "lying", and it doesn't mean I'm not self-aware. It means I'm human!

And as far as I'm concerned, everyone else is in much the same boat. We're all heaps of contradictory clusterfuck, and I'm ok with that. We are what we are. People who can't handle this are probably repressed and probably have precisely as many contradictions as the rest of us without even knowing it. Contradictory people therefore do not bother me nearly as much as those who claim not to be.

    * Direct hypocrisy bothers me, however.

I would care if one consistently means harm.
