It might depend on what you're going to jail for. I think if it's just something like a bar fight (in which you do not seriously injure anyone), they don't keep you that long and you can use a public defender. You'd have some court costs and probably anger management classes, but that probably wouldn't be much more than a couple thousand. Writing a bad check for a small amount could get you in jail and oughtn't to cost more than a few thousand. I know someone that went to jail for contempt for two weeks and I know it didn't cost her $100K.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” ~ John Rogers
Currently having bailed a family member out of jail.. I would say it has costed for the entire process (when it's all said and done) for lawyer fees, court costs, bail, gas to drive there, work hours wages lost, etc.. Probably close to $5-6,000 for a rough estimate of the true cost of his going to jail when it will all be said and done.

Hitler was in jail too. Should we listen to Hitler?
if he were giving a lecture on how to gain political power, manipulate people via charisma or social networking, I'd be very interested in listening to Hitler
