I rarely go out to eat, but when I do, I tip a lot. Last time was 33%

I like to tip with cash, but I so rarely carry it that I keep falling into the tipping on the card hole. It is better to do it that way, I agree.

Anything that high or above, unless due to rounding, I reserve for people that spend radical amount of direct attention on me, like hair cutting people...

My normal tip is approximately 20%. If they fucked up, I might subtract. Outstanding service gets more.

bad balance and bad service are twain different, my east coast affiliate
if the person is a jerk, sure
but then you give the boss a tip about her/his employees
If there's hair in the food it's more than likely it's the cook's fault... but I can't go back there and castigate the cook... so the waiter takes the hit... and soon the waiters rebel against the cook, or take action... it's inspiring change Obama style: from the ground-up.

Well, I'm not saying a simple, one-time accidental spilling... I should have said a 'chronic spiller' (I had that once... hard to believe... but there were three spills in 30 minutes... water on the table, soup on my lap, and he edged some of the spaghetti off the plate (which escaped entanglement with other noodly strands and collapsed limply, bathed in marinara, on the table))... I still tipped him, but not well.

I beg to differ, Mr. Manifest... if one has bad balance, one oughtn't be a waiter. Perhaps a job as a cashier would be more suitable for the chronically wobbly.

I think I'm a pretty good tipper, I had a roommate for 9 years that was a waitress, so I heard all about the job.

My baseline is 20%. If I'm a regular at a particular place or the service is truly outstanding, then 25%. I've tipped more during the holidays at places where I'm a regular. If service is poor, I'll leave 10%. Leaving nothing can give the impression that it just slipped your mind. I think 10% sends a clearer message. If service is very poor or outright rude (which truly has happened only two or three times in my life), I'll make it a point to speak to the manager in addition to leaving a small tip.

What always truly confounds me is what to tip delivery drivers for pizza/Chinese, etc. I tip them 15% if there is a delivery charge and 20% if there isn't one. But I'm really just guessing.

People who put tip jars out at Starbucks or at places where you pick up takeout yourself deserve a glove slap.

Don't you have those mexico-style places down here with the semi-service? I feel like I need to contribute to the jar at places like that... There are so many variations, though, it gets a bit confusing.
