It depends on what I need the money for. If I've got a place to live and food to eat, etc and the kids aren't seriously in need of anything, I'll do physically unpleasant stuff for money, but I won't be degraded for it. If I'm about to be on the streets I'd tolerate some degradation.
If one of my kids or my husband was going to take permanent harm or die without money, I'd do just about anything.
I would not take from someone that would suffer serious hardship even if it meant my being on the streets, but I would do so to save one of my kids' lives or protect them from permanent harm.
If someone would not face serious hardship, I'd not take from them unless I was going to be on the streets. Even then, it might not be worth it because the shelters here are not too bad as long as you are a man or married. The shelter for single women is pretty close to being in jail, except I think the jail has air conditioning.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” ~ John Rogers
I wouldn't loose a sense, like sight or hearing. Anything that will permanently reduce my access to life experience. This includes things that inflict mental trauma that I really don't care to think to make a list of.
