    Default Germans

Do you get sick of seeing movies about WW2 from the allied perspective? What do you think of all the games about WW2? Do you take any pride in the accomplishments of the German army in WW2, or in German generals like Rommel, the Desert Fox?

Loaded question for me. I'm 1st generation American. Both of my parents came over from Germany and I didn't start speaking english until I was 6. I was very conflicted growing up, as I raised more German than American.

At the military academy, I studied a lot of German military history and took pride in the fact that they were held up as tactical and strategic innovators. I do have pride in my heritage and it's ties to generals like Rommel, Hausser, Guderian, von Manstein, Kleist, Ludendorf, Bluecher, Klausewitz, and Frederick the Great ... to name a few. Scores of lower level tactical commanders go unnamed, but I studied them as well for their sheer brilliance at what they did. My father was a German tank commander in WW2, and I learned at least as much about armored warfare from him as I did from formal instruction in the American Army.

Of course, there is the dark cloud that the Nazis cast over the German military in WW2, but that does not detract from the abilities of some of it's soldiers and officers.

Occasionally, the Second World War needs to be seen from this perspective.

Otherwise: well-designed tanks, remarkable longevity through the Fischer-Tropsch process, and so on. The SOBs took losing pretty well.

    Edit: Historical inaccuracy intentional.
