    Default second-person plural personal pronouns

Ah, the second-person plural personal pronoun. It's present in many languages; as usted, vous, euch, 您, mo, voi, ...

Virtually every other language has a leg-up on English in this department. Our lovely choices are, basically,
    • y'all. Complete with hickbilly connotation.
    • you all. Too cumbersome.
    • all of you. Even more cumbersome.
    • y'unz. What the hell?
    • y'inz. What the even more hell?
    • yous. Might be acceptable.
    • you guys. Too informal, and also ladies are left out.
    • you (contr. thou). Co-opted by the damn second-person singular use of 'you.'
    • ye. .. fell out of fasion.
    • you lot.

    What's your favorite?

I live in Texas, and say y'all. But I'm no hillbilly (I'm mixed Asian/White, grew up middle class). I guess it's part of the dialect here to string a lot of words together. "Whattya y'all gonna do t'night?"

I also say y'all, and have never shot a gun in my life (or even touched one).

Oh and I say "you guys" too, and it's not gender specific.

I write "y'all" myself, but I rarely say it. I don't know why.

My dad says you'uns if he isn't paying attention.

I guess our second-person plural got lost with our informal pronouns. I don't think they're coming back.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

I grew up in Texas, live in Boston, and use "y'all" or "you guys", depending. People do blink when I use y'all, though (even more so for using "all y'all" for second person plural inclusive). I think "y'all" wins for brevity (one syllable!) and gender-neutrality, but things Southern don't play so well in the US's Northeast.

Yeah my Texan roommie says "y'all" sometimes and it does jump out at me, and then I realize she is totally being sincere using it.

Same here. I'd say "you guys" to a female-only group even. "What time do you guys want to meet up?"
