It's been well below -30C with windchill all week here. Below -20C every day even without windchill. Not sure what that is in F, but fucking cold.

-30C is -22F, -20C is -4F .... YOW. I think I've heard of -5F over here on the east coast (Maryland, mid-atlantic latitude) once when I was a kid, but never since (it sometimes hits 5F / -15C at night in February over here but it's rare and usually a noteworthy cold-snap when it occurs)

It's actually pretty normal for my city to have a few days around -35 to -40C (maybe -25 to -30C without windchill) this time of year - but usually it's just a day or two here and there, not a whole week.

In the summer we'll have a few +30 to 40C (around 100F) heat waves...we're a city of extremes!

    Winter? What does that mean?

In Australia, our winters are pretty mild. I personally have never seen snow (though there are places here where you can go to see snow).

I love winter because I don't like sweating (other than from physical exertion) and I prefer winter fashion. It's summer here right now. Most days when it's hot, I don't even want to leave my apartment.

I like winter. Snow is precipitation made for play. Cold air is natural air conditioning. It's a season, but it's also another world, especially out in nature.

Last winter in the mountains of northern Michigan (the UP):

Temp: 9F, windchill somewhere below 0F
Precip: 4 feet of snow on the ground, more falling in a snowstorm lasting a night and the next day
No bugs. Actually, I did see one. It was striding across the surface of the snow. I nearly ate it when grabbing a handful of snow. Falling down is fun. Having to eat snow to stay hydrated because the streams and lakes are either frozen over or inaccessible under the deep snow is a unique challenge. A sitting bench is dug into the snow for relaxing and sitting at dinner. Unexpectedly, I wake up and have to unzip my sleeping bag because I'm too warm.

    Best backpacking trip ever.

The only thing about winter I like is the first 10 minutes after it starts snowing.
After that, it's already old and I want the sun to come back.

It was 7F, now 8F. Wow, it's a heat wave!
