I admit to introducing myself in this way when I'm not that interested in conversation. I hate small talk.

If I really wanted to get to know someone, I'd ask if they want to join me doing something else more interesting with just myself or any friends I'm with.

My point is, boring introductions are a reflection of boring norms of what you call the western social environment. Don't treat the symptom, treat the disease.

You have to disclose such information to be personable?

I thought people liked the mysterious. You are not your job, etc.

I don't. I'm one of those that kind of hovers around and either gets absorbed through some strange osmosis magic, or not.

You directly start talking about something interesting that's happening around, or the place where you are, or what are your plans for the night, or some current events, or any kind of small talk really. I never mention anything about my job or educational background when introducing myself to people unless it's in a job-related setting or they ask directly, what would it be for?

(to be honest: I also don't like it how it's done before a speech or a conference, it has now become a ritual. Who cares about where you studied and for whom you work, let me see what you have to say about the subject matter. If you have been invited, chances are you have a decent educational background yadda yadda)

What are some clever and less than boring ways you found to introduce yourself to others that do not include what you do with your time at the moment?
I don't know about clever, but I am very good at revealing only the specific information I want to share in a given encounter. Generally I introduce myself simply by name, then just start talking about something, usually related to the circumstance. If it's a purely social event, I might ask how they came to know the hosts; if a topical event (seminar, lecture, even concert), I might ask how they became interested in that subject, band, type of music, etc. If a location I am in for the first time, I might ask about it (what's your favorite exhibit in the museum?)

Like Bologna, though, I identify strongly with my occupation, and am usually much more comfortable revealing that than many other details of my life and pastimes.
I've been called a criminal, a terrorist, and a threat to the known universe. But everything you were told is a lie. The truth is, they've taken our freedom, our home, and our future. The time has come for all humanity to take a stand...

Hi, I'm myname and I have an answer to all your questions. So please, take a seat.

note: Make sure you say 'an' answer, not 'the' answer. And appear intellectual and wise. Serious with a light comforting smile. Nothing creepy mind you.
