I'd like to participate, but my real name's so unique I'd be successfully Googled in a picosecond. I enjoy posting without restraint...

    Default A Curious Phenomenon

A manifestation of some jungian function or the lack of it on my part?

What does it take to openly share such information? Trust, Fe?

    Don't take it wrong, I'm curious about a phenomenon I don't understand.
I'm spending more time on www.seesmic.com a site for real time video conversation.

There seems to be much less desire to hide behind a pseudonym when you can be seen and heard in real time.

I too have wondered about the pseudonym phenomenon. I suspect it is a throw-back to the culture of the book where you could not see or hear the author. And pseudonyms were not only possible but not uncommon.

However in real time video conversations on www.seesmic.com the author can be seen and heard.

And to grow and develop as a person it is helpful, even necessary, to reveal yourself to others.

It is a good idea to do this in an environment of reasonable trust. However in an environment of pseudonyms, trust is difficult to develop. And so we get a vicious circle of lack of trust and pseudonyms and a further lack of trust.

This is essentially an adolescent environment.

And an adolescent environment is not conducive to personal growth.

OK, revealing part of one's social network - or pieces of one's identity - are two different breeds of security vulnerabilities. If I'd have to choose one, I'd rather give my name. Can't anymore, I've said too much.

Well since I've just met 16 people from this forum irl and they all know my name, I'm not too worried. I think you'll feel better if you just tell us your real name. If not then thats fine too.

EDIT: I wrote that before I saw this:

Meeting with active members is different than telling your name where all the lurkers and such can see it.

I revised the OP to mention first name only. Of course I'd never reveal my middle and last name as I secretly believe most people are freaks who are out to get me.

I think it goes without saying that if you're not comfortable sharing this information then definitely don't.

I completely agree and that's where common sense comes into play. I'm perfectly happy calling you heart. I actually sometimes call Cafe, Cafe irl.
