Actually, I think I may be about to cave. A little Internet research turned up the idea that a better Hebrew-English transliteration would be 'Aharown.

The meaning offered is "giver of light," which still suggests a connection with the Vedic Arun, but it appears phonetically further from the mark.

Now I'm intrigued, and must get to digging.

BTW, I found it here, in an online version of Strong's Concordance. There is a link to click and hear the Hebrew word spoken, if you're interested.

What do you make of the pronunciation?

Hmmm... based on the phonetic transcription, it's something like:

aa-haa-row-(nh)... can't get the sound to work... keeps giving me a .pl extension which is unrecognized when I click the 'speaker' link...

We need to get Mercea Eliade in here, stat.

P.S. Could someone tell me where "stat" comes from?

Okay, another question: Is there a more likely linguistic connection between the Hebrew Aharown and the Vedic Arjuna?

I think it was in Jen's "Compliment an MBTIc Member's Gaping Asshole" thread.

She made her first appearance in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as far as movies go. But as far as books, I'm don't remember, but she might have first appeared in Goblet of Fire.

well... I thought Arjuna was derived from the Sanskrit "dhaatu" or root form: /rj, implying stability, cleaving to a single line... thus implying that Arjuna was steady, solid... like his brother Yuddhisthira (firm in war)...

BUT.... in my Sanskrit dictionary, it lists arjuna as also meaning white, bright...

it's like every other name I come across means "shining, bright, or fair" or "sun, otherworldly"!

god... I'm not deep enough into my Sanskrit studies to give you an authoritative answer, and there are very few people in the world working on issues like these... particularly regarding the connections between Hebrew and Sanskrit...

Hmm. I'm comparing the last two posts in this thread. The difference between testicles and no testicles is very interesting.
