    2.) My mind just lily-pads and connects the topics in this way - ancestry - nationality - recent events regarding nationality - Ukrainian festival


    So, your answer would have stopped the conversational flow, maybe made things awkward. Being preemptive like that almost sounds like you're offended.

    That sounds more like you dislike short talk; not everybody does. In any case, such a question following me asking him where he's from certainly gives a hint of a deeper meaning to his question. And besides, the large bulk of the people who attend the festival are Ukrainian.
