I ask because I could never get my head around the structure of comedy. To me the humour has to be in the moment, the subtleties, the content, the way it is said, the mannerisms, the turn of phrase.

To me all those elements combine to make something brilliant and yet in a structure environment, while this does work as in sit-coms or stand-up, I can never understand how it would work for someone like me who enjoys the moment of comedy rather than the framework of it.
Hmmm. I think comedy is both. It's the improv, in-the-moment stuff that just works because it was created in that moment. But it's also something that can be tweaked and revised. I know with standup, many comedians do both--they'll write the joke but refine the word choice and delivery in the moment. Sometimes the sound of a word or the specificity or absurdity of the reference is what marks the difference between not funny, amusing, or laugh-out-loud funny. I always was fascinated by the idea of what makes this thing funny, but not that. A lot of the time, it's something you observe so much that it's intuitive. I absorbed a lot of that as a kid so that it was just second nature. I just knew what would be a funny reference.

For the spec script thing, we were going to write a 30 Rock one. I've watched that stuff so much that I know how the characters interact, what they're motivated by, how absurd or realistic their outlook is, what the tone is, etc. So the structure of it is largely intuitive once you figure out a unique premise.

But there are even rules for improv, like that you should always say, "yes, and..." rather than shutting down a possibility. So there really are rules to comedy, even if they're so internalized that it seems entirely organic.

Maybe @ZPowers can weigh in on this, too, with some actual standup experience.

No, I am not a comedian. I look at a situation and I tell it how it is.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

No. And I often find people who've adopted comedy as a 24/7 persona very annoying.

I make myself laugh. If anyone else does it's the frosting to a moment full of cake.

    Sigh. Now I desire cake.

    Also, this.

Once I made this lolzy joke about ''hailing the convocation of my racial superiors'' (I am not white going to a predominantly white school) but my friends were offended for me. I think they thought it was funny, but they just wanted to not be a tool like me.
