I don't have a 'plan', I 'pre-pay'. If I got a two-year (or three) contract with a provider my monthly costs would more than triple. I'd pay hundreds more over the course of the contract. My service terms would be 'better' (i.e. I'd probably have better long-distance rates and such), but I probably wouldn't use them often enough to justify it.
