... if you stick with an expensive two-year contract.

I don't have a 'plan', I 'pre-pay'. If I got a two-year (or three) contract with a provider my monthly costs would more than triple. I'd pay hundreds more over the course of the contract. My service terms would be 'better' (i.e. I'd probably have better long-distance rates and such), but I probably wouldn't use them often enough to justify it.

Well as far as I know a smart phone would be worthless and not even operable as a "smart phone" without a contract, considering the data plan it takes to do most things on it. So it's just a matter of whether or not tripling your monthly rate is worthwhile for all the bells and whistles.

I think it looks like a really solid release. Substantially thinner, substantially faster. The two tone color scheme on the back is hot.

Side note: iOS 6 comes out September 19th (next Wed).

Looks nice. Quite happy with my 4S though so no need to upgrade. Much more interested in iOS 6 though

I already pay a small monthly fee for "unlimited internet"; I was hoping I could simply buy the iPhone outright, put the SIM card in it and Bob's-your-uncle. I just don't know if "unlimited internet" = "unlimited data". If not then I guess I'll buy some cheap dumb-phone.
