I have a fourteen-year-old so I probably have radar for that kind of thing.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Yeah, having a child would affect the radar. I do teach a lot of kids and adolescence, so I know about the differences in emotional processing between various stages of development and adulthood. There is a reason for 'statutory rape' clause, a reason why minors are not tried as adult, etc. The frontal lobe in the brain does not complete its development until around age 18. Since that is the judgment center for the brain, it is where emotional regulation occurs. This is true even for genius children and prodigies. Children have wisdom and thoughts that are extremely important, but their emotional worlds should be treated age appropriately. They are not adults.
