Trolling goes to far when people die.

Hah. I tend to take a very Te view on it, when comments have the tendency to completely and purposefully derail conversation and serve no purpose other than that, it has gone too far. A lot of behaviours fall under that umbrella, enough that I won't detail them.

Depends on the intent. If it's just to get angry reactions from certain groups, e.g, the kind of posts created purely to antagonise women or other disadvantaged groups, it's always lame. A lame power game. Ditto if it's to bully or intimidate an opponent or someone you just don't like very much.

If it's an attempt to expose someone as a hypocrite, liar or some other harmful influence, to bait them into revealing themselves, I don't have a problem with it. It then becomes practically a public service. Akin to investigative journalism. This is the only valid use of trolling I can think of.

people make mistakes on other's intentions all the time though, how do you know you're not harming, because you think they might be something they're not?

Sure you can. By witnessing something firsthand or by the testimony of two or more reliable sources.

If in doubt, err on the side of caution.

sorry for not completely following you, i'm not that smart anymore, not phishing for compliments, just saying the truth i don't think you would but if you had the strange urge do not compliment me. can you give an example? it can be made up.

A whole argument over someone's word choice when you know exactly what they meant.
