Default What Word Did You Learn Today?

    Hierotopy

(from Ancient Greek: ἱερός, sacred + Ancient Greek: τόπος, place, space) is the creation of sacred spaces, which is viewed as a special form of human creativity, and a related academic field, which spans anthropology, art history and religious studies. The term was coined in 2001 by Russian art-historian and byzantinist Alexei Lidov.[1] Hierotopy accounts not only for artistic images and the symbolic world they form, but also for the entire collection of various media that serve to organize a sacred space.

Pyrocumulous - A pyrocumulus, or fire cloud, is a dense cumuliform cloud associated with fire or volcanic activity.

A pyrocumulus is similar dynamically in some ways to a firestorm, and the two phenomena may occur in conjunction with each other. However, one may occur without the other.

There is a word-of-the-day calendar out in our kitchen. For some reason, I can't recall today's word, but I can remember the definition.

lexadaisical - Being lackadaisical with your lexicon.

Will Ferrell played a particularly lexadaisical President Bush when he used the word "strategery".

barotrauma - injury of certain organs, especially the ear, due to a change in the atmospheric pressure.

any of several injuries arising from changes in pressure upon the body. Humans are adapted to live at an atmospheric pressure of 760 mm of mercury (the pressure at sea level), which differs from pressures experienced in underwater environments and in the upper atmospheres of space. Most body tissue is either solid or liquid and remains virtually unaffected by pressure changes; in certain cavities of the body, however, such as the ears, sinuses, lungs, and intestines, there are air pockets that either expand or contract in response to changes in pressure. Abrupt expansion or contraction of closed internal air spaces can injure or rupture surrounding tissues, such as the eardrum.
