I think if a bear develops a taste for human food to the point it is breaking into tents and becoming aggressive and stuff, they tend to kill it because it becomes a danger to people. So there's a whole campaign about keeping the bears wild, keeping your possessions together, so that doesn't have to happen.
Too bad we're not advanced enough to live on a few tasteless nutrition pellets a day, yet. That'd help.

Black bears usually run on their own, but if they don't the spray works.

However, sometimes they are starving, in which case, they may in fact just commit to being a predator in survival mode. People always forget about this possibility when they talk about how passive they are. It happened to my aunt & uncle once and luckily they happened to have the keys to the boat on their person, otherwise it would have ended badly.

I assume Grizzlies would be a different story.

So she went outside to walk her dog. Then went onto the porch because the dog was on the porch with the bear.

I must have missed something. The thought is that the bear would have gotten her if the dog hadn't been there and she had gone out some other time and she wouldn't have just closed and locked the door?
