Default Help me think of song phrases everyone knows

A lot of people here know I am involved with our local Renaissance Festival. I'm a musician, and a very strong introvert, so I don't really like the improv part of it that some patrons expect. I feel much more comfortable with my music. But between shows, when we're just hanging around, I want some kind of "schtick" that I can do to interact with patrons. I thought of this idea that I think will be good, but I need help!

The idea is this: I want to think of phrases/lyrics from songs that everyone would recognize if I just played the melody on my recorder. They should be brief, so I can use them almost like conversation.

Example: If I played the melody of the first line of the Happy Birthday song, everyone would know that the words are "Happy birthday to you." That way I can tell someone Happy Birthday without speaking. Make sense?

Another phrase I already use is the beginning of the song "Safety Dance," where the lyrics are "You can dance if you want to." (Because I play with a dance troupe and I use that to encourage bystanders to join in when we teach dances.)

    Ready, set, go!
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.

It's probably not your thing.. but some geeks would totally be drawn in if you played something from early video game music. Like Legand of Zelda or Super Mario Bros.

I've heard more than a couple leads in rocks songs work in 'Blue Moon' into a solo.. it doesn't end up sounding to gimmicky, actually. I like the safety dance idea.

Idealy, I think you'd want something that speaks to you as well as your audience. I'm going to continue thinking about this.

What you are describing reminds me of musical cues used at sporting events. For example

The same kind of message. You might observe some piano bar players to get more ideas, too.

I've thought about it.. I think the song itself needs to suggest something. That being said, you need to start a set with the intro for "Smells Like Teen Spirit", or "We Are Immortals".

If you can be more abstract with it than just exact phrases you can follow some melodrama stock cues such as these songs

but I don't know how useful these would be for your routine with a dance troupe/interacting with passersby.

Theme to Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

In fact, television themes in general are probably a rich vein to tap.

I'd guess "Don't Stop Believing," as it may be the most heavily karaoke'd song of all time.

There's probably about a million things by say, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, etc.

And classical music, of course. Who can't identify at least a couple Beethoven, Mozart, even Wagner tunes?
