Default What would happen if America suddenly became isolationist?

Somewhat inspired by a post by Victor where he stated that he would like it if America withdrew their military from Australia.

I started wondering, what would be the effects if America did this to the extreme? How would the world be affected if America suddenly withdrew all of its forces from everywhere they are deployed and brought them back home?

On top of that, having isolationist policies would imply that we would no longer attempt to influence foreign policy, help countries that need help, enter economic agreements, etc.

What good or bad could come of this? I often hear people complaining about America's involvement in things, so what would happen if they got their wish, and we stopped?

(I was thinking of putting this in politics, but it said "past and present" and this is a theoretical future, so I put it here...)

Lol. Total chaos. Complete and utter market collapse, dollar value plummeting, import market collapsing (and America is an import country), extremely wide gap between the poor and the profiters. Large increase in criminal activity probably leading to a police state. Government declaring marshal law. Farms raided and pillaged, food supplies running short, food production falling short, hunger, famine... Welcome America to the third world.

Although, if you would influence economy to start becoming a country that produces again instead of relying on import, and slowly shift the country from being an Import country to an export country, then and only then becoming isolationist could prove to be profitable. Having other countries rely on you means that your value would go up internationally.

It's interesting how no one has mentioned any adverse effects which may hit the rest of the world, should this occur.

The economic collapse is too obvious, we live in a global economy, fewer and fewer nations can survive on their own economically.

China would become far more dominant in asia far more rapidly. This would destabilize Japan. The korean peninsula would be far more destabilized. Russia would begin pushing against the European bloc far more aggressively. I am curious how India would respond as I see china and russia teaming together to fill the power vacuum.
For all that we have done, as a civilization, as individuals, the universe is not stable, and nor is any single thing within it. Stars consume themselves, the universe itself rushes apart, and we ourselves are composed of matter in constant flux. Colonies of cells in temporary alliance, replicating and decaying and housed within, an incandescent cloud of electrical impulses. This is reality, this is self knowledge, and the perception of it will, of course, make you dizzy.

Federal expenditures would dramatically drop raising the value of the $. International pubic oppion would rise. Greater civil liberties at home.

A good example of a country that can get away being (somewhat) isolationist is Switzerland.

Isolationism is awesome as long as you can accept that the country will have to accept the authority of other countries more often.

You simply can't be an isolationist and still be the hegemon.

Also, the decline of a hegemon very frequently leads to conflict.

I'm convinced that anything which would remove the USA influence in the rest of the world, be it an isolationist regime or a civil war or something else, will essentially make way for another world war. The USA is the principle obstacle in several potential conflicts, conflicts which might only become more likely after economic devastation that would likely follow the USA exit from the world stage.
