A fairer question will be, when will the human race go extinct. I'm pretty sure the earth will remain for many billions of years until perhaps it is finally swallowed up by some black hole or sorts.

"End of the World" traditionally signifies an unpleasant end for mankind.

I suspect this is an externalization of the anxiety of death onto the larger world. The world will end for each person as they die.

Christians have been predicting this for 2000 years, and I'm sure they always will.

That makes some sense. Christianity is obsessed with death.
