You're taking the poll question too literally.

That was my thought. The world itself seems likely to keep going for quite some time, sans humans if necessary.

But that's not what it means.

The noun END OF THE WORLD has 2 senses:
    1. (New Testament) day of the Last Judgment when God will decree the fates of all men according to the good and evil of their earthly lives
    2. an unpleasant or disastrous destiny

My cousin knew a mother that thought the world was gonna end in 2000. Therefore, she took her children (3 males) out of school, as she considered it a waste of time.
    They became robbers.

That could be the plot of a work of fiction. You could do a lot with that idea.

If we are discussing a poll, all that matters is how it was defined by the people who were asked the question -- which, ironically, was not specified in the article you have linked to, so we will never know what the question actually was.

I am not sure why you think it matters what the dictionary says, since people do not carry a dictionary around and look up words before answering poll questions.

    Get a grip.

More on topic, it's fairly unlikely that humanity will be wiped out in our lifetime. While there may be some violence, overall the major powers are quite stable and it would be hard for anyone to disrupt that.
    Whoops.
