    I said three days, but in truth a day and a half is long enough for me.

    I agree SH. It's been almost two weeks and it was my idea and even provided their tickets to visit but I've just had about all I can take. I am somewhat disappointed with my feelings on this because they are family but I am so accustomed to doing my own thing and this has taken it's toll on me.

    Yeah I couldn't take a week, too long for me. Luckly that's only happened once. I did what others (ESJs) would percieve as the selfish thing and drove off to the park to get my solitude. I was there for about a couple of hours and turned off my phone so no one would disturb me. When I came back every one was offended by what I did, my mom was mad too but she understood at least.

    too long is when one gets irritated by the space invasion. i think it would really depend on who the guests are, and how their behaviour is like?
    You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
    They called me the hyacinth girl.
    Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden,
    Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
    Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
    Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
    Looking into the heart of light, the silence.

    Back before my mom went off the deep end, I didn't mind her, but she would compulsively clean up after me and I would get even lazier than I already am, then she would get worn out and stressed within a week. I don't mind my step-dad or brother staying, but they aren't really like having guests.

    Other than that I don't like having house guests at all. It's better for everyone if we all have our own space and get down time in the evening. If I'm traveling with my kids I really don't like being a house guest either. Different households have different rules and different things bug different people and transplanting one household into another for any amount of time is bound not to go smoothly.
    “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

    I'm guessing because they've gone all the way from the UK to visit their son, grandkids etc in America!

    As short a time as possible. I need a lot of space. This is why I've never lived with roommates or in close proximity to other people if I had a choice in the matter (it drove me mad as a child). Even moving into my current place (a condo) was a stretch for me because I've lived in SFHs my entire life.

    On that vein, I can also become quite annoyed with people that I must deal with closely on a daily basis. This last trip killed me because I had no option to go off alone away from people, and that left me exceptionally stressed.

    That said, some people are completely benign and I could live with them indefinitely.
