At some point not so long ago i may of agreed with success being the best revenge. Nowadays i don't agree with this because if i want revenge then i am still holding on to a notion/ideal that i was treated differently in a way that was less than perfect according to my values. By looking for revenge by any means i am spending far to much time thinking about you and how you slighted me and less about me and how i am going to move my life forward in a positive manner.

Wise words and good for you for not biting.

I don't believe in an eye for an eye; I prefer an eye for 2 eyes

What's not understood about the idea or principle of an eye for an eye is that it is a hard legal teaching about proportionality, it means that you dont kill entire tribes because of the loss of an eye or wounding, its actually contra to the ideas of collective responsibility which the state Israel has used before now and Mossad threatened to adopt after the second world war with a plan to poison the whole of Germany.

Jesus' teaching about turning the other cheek is misunderstood too, he is more radical than the earlier teachings but consistent with the spirit of them, he suggests forgiveness rather than vengence but also it should be remembered that when you are turning the other cheek that you only have two cheeks.

In the old testament when one of the prophets interceeded with God about the fate of a people he had found worthy of condemnation God was prepared to concede over and over again that he would spare them all if he could find a decreasing number of good men but he doesnt abandon the idea of justice and in the end exacts punishment when he cant find a single good man in the whole people.

Proving someone wrong and vindicating your own abilities has some appeal to it but I don't really like the idea of trying to achieve success with the sole purpose of getting back at people.

So I am wondering, if you had success, if it was incidental, yet you were hurt by said person in the past, would you be tempted to rub this success in said person's face?

    Serious question.
