    Default Motivation

So... what motivates you? In work, play, health, goals, etc
I have an inner monologue that sounds strikingly similar to something off Animal Planet.

comfort, knowledge, power, pleasure, ego, in no particular order

A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?'
A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?'
A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God... '

I have a distinct lack of motivation in most things.

I'm having trouble feeling motivated enough to write a well thought out response to this thread. I'd say security and comfort are huge motivators for me as well as seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. Also knowledge, understanding, and a feeling of doing something meaningful.

Opportunities to be creative and inventive.
Significant, fundamental learning opportunities and new experiences that help shape my set of fundamental guiding principles.

Sometimes, fun motivates me. But that's rarer than it probably should be.

When i feel excited about something...a new plan/idea that i want to explore. When it's mundane daily task based it's more forcing myself than being motivated. I tend to put off things like paperwork until absolutely necessary...and my absolutely necessary point is probably way after most other peoples. Think piles of unopened mail.
I find it really helps to have someone else's encouragement too. I find it easy to motivate others...not so much myself.
I think thats fairly true of a lot of people though.

^ Yeah, this is mostly true for me as well.

To expand on my OP, how do you motivate yourself to do tasks related to your goals but that you really, really don't want to do?

I just start on those tasks anyway. Eventually, I forget that I didn't want to do it and just keep doing it.

.. ideally. Sometimes, it works out; sometimes, it doesn't.

If that doesn't work, I try connecting myself back to the goal.. visualizing myself at that goal. 'What do I need to do to get there? A bunch of tedious stuff? Well, okay.'

Small strides toward the uninteresting tasks can pay off in spades.
