Same here, when I was younger at least. But then I got into a relationship with a half-asian... now it feels weird to not take my shoes off at the door -- so much so that I'll even do it at other peoples' houses where it's not expected.

so many things seem to become habits if we do them enough -- my childhood was really different, but things like wearing my seatbelt, waiting to eat until everyone has their food, handling the opening of Christmas presents a certain way, etc... all of that became ingrained so much later in life that now it feels weird if I don't, even if I'm with someone else or at their home.

I live in the Midwest and I know very few people who do not take their shoes off upon entering a house. When visiting I always assume outside shoes are left at the door.

I wear house slippers, I do not wear my shoes much beyond the outer door.

Americans love tracking whatever shit they walked thru outside all over the inside of the homes for some reason. I'm with the Japanese on this.

In my house? No shoes... no socks. Doesn't feel right walking around with shoes or socks (and slippers for that matter.)

As for other people's house, that depends on the owner of that house. I generally keep my socks on. If they want me to wear slippers into their house, I will.

I only prance around the house with shoes on only if I am in a rush because I've forgotten something at home.

I had a pair of deerskin moccasins I would occasionally wear outside to get the mail because it seemed pointless to change shoes and they were exceptionally comfortable (fleece, fur-lined, etc.), but I eventually wore them out. Otherwise I go barefoot in the house.
