Had to bring it back to the 4 letters.

    Or, well, 8 functions.

YES! The whole time I was reading it I was going "GET OVER YOURSELVES!" and wanted to throw the book across the room.

Other obnoxious characters that haven't been mentioned (? i don't think?):
    - Kate from "Lost"
    - Most lead characters in Judd Apatow movies
    - Dr. Cameron from "House" -- her neuroses about her dead husband were really, really disturbing to me
    - Lila Tournay from "Dexter"
    - Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson
    - The titular character from "The Cable Guy"
    - SOCRATES
    - Everyone in "The Sun Also Rises" by Hemingway
    etc etc etc!

Man, I can't narrow this down to ten people...

Michael Corleone? Eric Cartman? Are you kidding me?

Both of those characters fucking rock.

Skyler almost made it onto my list, too.

In fact, she would have, but she got better once she knew what was going on.

I actually kind of started liking her once she was in on the plan.

I don't like her sister, either; but not enough for this list.

Well, in my defense... For the most part, Tom was just doing his job as the keeper of the house (Ms. Uncomfortable Racial Stereotype sometimes even threatened to hit him with the broom if he failed), whereas Jerry was stealing food from the pantry (granted, he needed to eat too, but sometimes he was pretty dickish to Tom for the heck of it...).

Robinson from Robinson, Doeshka Meijsing: not Robinson Crusoë, but a whiny girl never taking initiative.
Asteriah from De Beweging, Tamske: also no initiative. When I realized why my story didn't work, I took a main character with complete opposite character next time. Instead of introspective, the new main was outgoing, blunt, realistic,... In short I've made my very first ESTJ main character and my very first completed story which was also quite nice to read.

I can't think of more characters for now. There are more books I hated, but that had more to do with the message ("Nooit meer slapen" by W.F. Hermans: if you dare to dream about fame, you can't be a good scientist; moreover life has no meaning) or worldbuilding (Eragon II looks just like someone bought an expansion set and hastily added new parts to an already constucted world) or plain dullness (Dutch Teacher, why do I have to read about ordinary people whining about ordinary problems or living ordinary lives when there are books about heroic people having adventures and SOLVING their problems?).

Edit: thought about another sort of character: 'd Anjal from "Meestermagiër" by W.J. Maryson, and less so, Stach from "Koning van Katoren" by Jan Terlouw. These are just too perfect, they always take the right decision, they always are exceptionally good at the important things they try. I can't think of anything 'd Anjal is bad at. Maybe singing or something else irrelevant.

Umbridge or Napoleon are a whole other sort of "hate". I'd hate them if they were real... and because of that, for fictional characters they are GOLD!
'd Anjal, Stach, Asteriah and Robinson just are plain dull. In real life they wouldn't stand out, they wouldn't elicit any emotions from me. And yet whole books are devoted to them. Why?

I have a low tolerance for lame. I can't watch a whole film with characters I hate. Therefore, I have nothing productive to offer, beside one:

Noooo! Ms Bennett is incredibly pathetic but she's there as a foil to Elizabeth. Don't write off a beautiful, beautiful, elegantly-written book because of her.

Ok, maybe I'm a little biased. It's my favourite book of all time.

I've got your back. I always thought Tom and Jerry was kind of inferior and unlikable as a cartoon series anyway, even as a kid, but I never liked Jerry. He wasn't a likable rogue like Bugs Bunny. He was just a brat. Similarly, I always wanted Wile E. Coyote and Sylvester the Cat to win. But I've always liked villains more than protagonists unless there was something really special about the protagonist.
