Huh, considering everyone else's answers, maybe I should change mine to 'never shy'. I'm shy only in specific situations, romantic ones to be exact. I'm usually very talkative and comfortable with social situations, but when it comes to dating, flirting etc. I'm just all over the place
Chimera of Filth
A gruesome beast with dripping flesh
Clings to me as a sick fixture
My throbbing heart it gnawed apart
It stalks and hunts me through mirrors
Until recently, I used to NOT think that shyness went hand-in-hand with introversion but in thinking about it, I think they do go together. Mostly because introverts tend to be self-centered and introspective, and it's because of those traits that shyness develops.
That said, not all introverts are shy, just as not all extroverts are outgoing. It's just a generalization.
"How dreadful!" cried Lord Henry. "I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable. There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect." ~ Oscar Wilde - The picture of Dorian Gray
I can be very shy, self-conscious and quite quiet (! ) when I meet people for the first time. But I think it also depends on whether there're things to say or not. If the conversations interest me, I could put aside my shyness and talk endlessly. If not, I'd rather retreat to my mind.
