Today I went to Costco to buy some bottled water, because I frown upon the idea of drinking from the tap. I took a folding cart with me for the specific purpose of hauling that water. After I purchased the water, I started driving home. A few minutes later, I realized that I left the cart at the store parking lot. I immediately turned the car around and made a hasty return trip back, while still maintaining the speed limit and respecting all other applicable traffic laws. As I arrived back to the parking lot, to my dismay, the cart was no longer there. At that exact moment, I saw an Asian couple pull away from the spot that I was previously parked in. Since the time window between when I left the cart and returned for it was rather small, I made a reasonable conclusion that they were responsible for my cart no longer being there. I am quite certain that the culprits were not Japanese, because Japanese usually do not appropriate unattended items due to their cultural norms and expectations. If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say the culprits were Chinese. Possibly Korean.
Anyway, as I carried that heavy box of bottled water to my apartment without the assistance of my now stolen cart, I reflected on the fact that our country should be a bit more discerning when it comes to accepting new immigrants.
