Default Online diaries or journal recommendations

I would like to start a journal online. Does anyone have any recommendations for good places for this? If possible, I would like it to be free and with the ability/controls to be completely private. Does this even exist?

blogger and tumblr are the most known platforms for this. Wordpress is another which is more bells and whistles and a stepstone for professional blogging.

Ahh thanks. I've seen those but I've always seen the public ones. Do these allow your entries to be private?

There is livejournal and xanga too.

This reminded me to visit myspace and tribe.net to see if anything happened, its been ages since I visited some of the social sites since forums and sometimes facebook. not that I am particularly social per say, nostalgia lane.

I've had an online journals made in many corners of the internet realm.
Livejournal was hugely a favorite of mine. It still would be, but I've fallen out from it. It was highly customizable, with many filtering features. The ability to join communities and friend people was ideal. I'm going to say that it used to be far more popular, but it is still very efficient.

I've just started with Tumblr, which seems to be fiddling with its own settings as it goes. I'm not sure if they have a 'following only' option, although they do have a 'Private' option. Personally, I prefer something that allows me to filter to certain friends or friends only.

I've heard of Blogger/Blogspot. I haven't utilized it myself, but have followed friends on there. There is definitely a nice privacy option, wherein you can send invites to people to view your blog or just do a 'friends only' sort. Also seems very customizable, and utilized by enough people to keep branching out to other blogs interesting.

It's odd, but I went from a normal journal like Livejournal to creating a journal on Typec, which is now my main form of journaling. Of course, privacy is a bit shot

I use Livejournal. You have four options for the privacy of posts: friends, private, everyone, or custom. I also use Blogger, but I use LJ for my friends posts.
