Default I need to buy a business suit/shirt/shoes (have the tie)... and I'm broke.

I have never owned a business suit in my life. I have an important interview on the 20th and I want to look sharp, however I'm scraping by at the moment with not a lot of money. Like I said, I have never owned a suit and have therefore never been shopping for one. I need a business suit that is professional and conservative. Are the cheaper business suits pre-tailored or do they get tailored the same way a suit at any higher price level would (customized for you, by a tailor)? Does tailoring usually happen at department stores where you can buy suits or would I need to take it elsewhere to have it done? What is the typical turn around time for getting your suit tailored? What are some good stores to check out? I'm thinking Macy's or JC Pennys?.... and I also need a white Oxford shirt, and shoes... and probably other essential suit accessories that I don't even know exist.

    PLEASE HELP. Obviously I'm clueless.

    http://www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/

They do tailoring there too if you need it (you may not). I think even for free???

The cheapest route to go would be the second hand stores (i.e. salvation army, good will and other smaller ones). They have nice things sometimes if you don't mind that, but you'd have to get any tailoring done somewhere else.

Also maybe Men's Wearhouse? I dunno.. I'm not up on all the places to find mens appearal.

    Where?

I highly recommend checking out the second hand stores. Look for the biggest one you can find. You'd be shocked at what you find there. You'd probably pay maybe $30 bucks max for designer pants and jacket.

I won't know what's outdated and what's in style... or even what fits. I need a customer service representative to hold my hand T_T

I tend to do most of my work shopping for lady suits at Goodwill... mostly because I would rather spend my money on fun than on work and I hate clothes in the first place

I've always found perfectly decent clothes there and it's really cheap to get them tailored in the right part of town

I'm not exactly and expert, but this should be enough if you're not applying for a really prestigious position

    - Oxford shirts are fail, ones with stiff collars without are better
    - JC Penny's is good for basic stuff. you can probably get a pretty nice shirt for $30 if you go for a sale
    - it's best to go with a solid tie color if you're a fashion noob. also, it's best to go with a silk tie
    - make sure your belt matches your shoes in color and shininess
    - a trench coat can look more sophisticated than a torso length suit, but the latter is probably better if you don't know which style to pick out
    - the best color shirts to wear would be white, black or blue
    - a nice watch is a plus, but that might be pushing it if you're on a budget and don't already have a nice watch
    - jewelry is probably not a good idea (except for a wedding ring of course)

    good luck

men don't need to worry about that as much. conservative makes a better impression than trendy anyway.
