Thanks for all the suggestions/advice. I'm going to look at a local place that has suit rentals and see if there's anything that works for me, if not, I'll probably just look at some of the places mentioned in the thread.

If I go with a blue suit, here is my tie (bought it in Iraq :P):

    Looks sexier in person.

I'd still suggest a buy, wear & return. Nice tie though.

Found a suit today that I liked, but it's $300 (Armani) at Macy's... The buy/return method sounds appealing, but kind of unethical, especially considering the job I'm interviewing for. Sigh.

I wish I wasn't so broke right now.

    I'm going for a reserve/volunteer position. It's a great opportunity for me but I wouldn't get paid.

Yeah you could look at it as an investment of quality if you had enough money that you could potentially keep this suit for years and years.

Yeah, exactly. I mean it's not the only time I'd need a suit. I expect to interview many more times in the upcoming years. I hear if you're buying your first suit to go for black or blue. I guess gray isn't as appropriate for as many occasions as black/blue?

I think grey is great, depending on the shade. Ideal would be a charcoaly grey.

    You are misinformed.
You should stay away from black as it's only appropriate in limited circumstances (like funerals).
Navy and Charcoal grey are the most conservative and will be useful in most semi-formal occasions... charcoal more so.

Believe me I've learned about this the hard way. I once went to a professional dinner and I was the only guy in a room of 300 people with a sport coat. 95% of the guys had on charcoal suits and the rest navy.

I wouldn't worry as much about the quality of the suit. You just need something simple and conservative. Something too nice might actually go against you if your applying for volunteer position with a police department. Remember you're trying to show that you fit in.

Thanks, beef. Good advice. I'm gonna go with a dark gray/charcoal suit.
