I love sloths. I got to see one at the aquarium once, up close. So fucking marvelous. Hard to believe they are descended from ice age giants.

Yeah, I'm not much of an animal lover but sloths just ooze personality and I always liked them. Never got to see one up close, though.

Certain animals really seem joyful and there is something beautiful about that. Sloths seem joyful in a serene way. River otters seem joyful in a playful way.

    Not at all.

Megatherium and other giant ground sloths were only distinct relatives to the modern-day tree-dwelling sloths. They belonged to the same order, but diverged some 45 millions years ago (according to phylogenetics).

Besides, sloths are extremely dirty, filthy, smelly animals (Even is they could be hunted very easily, their repulsive smell prevents predators to bother eat them). They are so slow that their fur is literally crawling with parasites and insects. A symbiotic algae is often found thriving amongts their hairs, because it has time to take root and remain almost undisturbed (it also explains why some sloth have a curious green hue).
