Basically I only know English. I learned a bit of French in school, tried German for a bit but nothing qualitative enough to check off any of those fancy little boxes

I have a spanish degree, used to teach ESL to spanish speakers and speak spanish for my job on a nearly daily basis (and I translate for the rest of the office!)

I speak passable portuguese, and I can read it quite well... however, my writing in portuguese is atrocious

Japanese. I'm pretty fluent. My reading and writing isn't that good though.

The worst mistake people make in political arguments is assuming that the other side is not trying to do the right thing. This simple oversight makes productive conversation nearly impossible.

English and Irish fluently, and I have an intermediate grasp of French. I'm considerably better at listening to it than speaking it, though.

I speak Spanish pretty fluently--I've been learning it since middle school. I spent a month in Peru which helped me a lot, and I've been teaching it at the university for over a year now.

German--Studied it for 2.5 years, I can still speak and understand quite a bit, but I'm out of practice since all my eggs have been in the Spanish basket for the past year.

Portuguese--I'm learning it now, but it's a Portuguese for Spanish speakers course. I can understand almost anything I hear or read, it's just difficult to speak and write because of its similarity to Spanish.
