"How dreadful!" cried Lord Henry. "I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable. There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect." ~ Oscar Wilde - The picture of Dorian Gray
I used to be fluent in Spanish. But as I have no opportunities to speak it, it's been slowly dying more each year. I'm good at picking up languages though, so I think I could relearn it if I worked at it.
I took a year of Japanese... WOW... that is a difficult language. Very interesting to learn though. I would have taken Mandarin instead if we had been overseas a full three years. As it was, I arrived part way through the first semester of 8th grade and was too far behind to start with a brand new language.
Deutsch ist meine Muttersprache; aber eine andere Muttersprache als Englisch ist im Poll wohl nicht vorgesehen.
English is my first foreign language - As a freelance translator I need it on a daily basis but usually only translate from English to German, not the other way around.
Anything else would be educated guesswork based on family relationships (i.e. understanding some Dutch thanks to German or Catalan, Portuguese or Italian thanks to Spanish and French)
I have started a few more (mainly Dutch and Finnish) but gave up at a very early stage so that there is nothing left of it at all.
The next project is Russian. Wish me luck - I'll need it!!!
The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge. Neither love without knowledge, nor knowledge without love can produce a good life. - Bertrand Russell A herring's blog Johari / Nohari
My native language is German.
I'm studying English and Latin so I use both fairly frequently (and I really wish more people would actually use Latin actively - it would make the language so much easier!). Also had to learn Ancient Greek for studying Latin but I'm pretty bad at it and never managed to get into that fascinating language.
I learned French at school and did a course to brush it up a bit about a year ago, but haven't done anything since. I sometimes watch movies in French, but not very often, and it's enough to read and understand most French texts reasonably well, but I haven't used it actively in a very long time so it's a bit rusty.
I also learned some basic Italian back in school, and I've taught myself some Russian.
Next project is Spanish, and so far I'm really enjoying it
At some point I'd like to learn Dutch and Sanskrit and brush up my Ancient Greek and French.
