    Default Unfortunate surnames?

Do you ever why some people keep their unfortunate surnames?

I mean if I was, say Mr Pratt, I'd probably change my name.

Likewise, some names are amusing when considering their profession - Dr Coffin and Dr Kark must have a hard time getting patients.

My surname is Hubbard; many people seem to love asking 'oh, are you related to L. Ron Hubbard?'. My other family members don't particualrly like the correlation (we're not technically realted to him), although I find it kinds funny.

Maybe some people keep them just because they've been through enough hell with other people making fun of their surnames that they've hardened enough to withstand it? And they keep them with pride because it reminds them of all the mockery that they've had to endure and they've still come out of it a stronger and/or better person.

"Unfortunate" names are only amusing to people who decide to abuse them. What seems unfortunate to you might not seem that way to the person who wears the name. It might only become unfortunate to them because of how other people treat them about something they had no choice in.

On the contrary, they do have the choice to change their name.

Yes, but only after they've had to endure the pressure of having something "wrong" with their name according to some other people around them. Who knows how long that lasts. I'm not sure about the different laws regarding name changes in different countries, but you might have to wait until you've reached a certain age to change your name. Imagine having a name that, similarly to Gish, makes people "fall into a fit of childish laughter" for years on end and you really have no choice about that until you actually can legally change your name.

I know a Dr. Love and a Dr. Large (whose first name was unfortunately Richard or 'Dick'... which meant that on databases, he often came up as Large, Dick).

There was also a girl who I knew at school whose name was Sarah Short. She stood easily over 6 foot. Though, it suited her well and was a kind of statement for her personality... she wasn't by any means shy and had a pretty wicked sense of humour.

I also find those hyphenated names which married couples create kind of awkward. Sometimes they can be nice. I came across Smiley-Smith the other day (bride Smith and groom Smiley). Though sometimes they just don't work well.

We've got a Muff at work, his wife's name is Misty. I'm guessing either she has a really good sense of humor, or none at all.
