Its just acknowledging that they exist and that they're there.. sort of like tipping your hat to the other person. It shows a general sense of open-ness and polite behavior, indicators that make people feel more at ease.

It's the same as saying "hi", only in the morning. Just a way of acknowledging another person's presence, I guess.

A lot of your response will depend on the level of support and acceptance you want from the people around you.

Generally, if you interact with people even on mere social pleasantries, they'll be more inclined to think favorably of you and/or remember who you are. If you don't and/or ignore them, the favor typically gets returned.

“Pleasure to me is wonder—the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.” ~ H.P. Lovecraft

A way of saying hi in the morning. When mourning you should never say Good Morning, it's confusing.

what I don't get is, I still have to say it even if the world is burning down. How is that a good morning? I guess no more future to worry about, but still in the grand scheme of things that to me makes a bad morning.

You don't have to say good morning when the world is burning. Maybe when the house is burning but not the world...

i always understood it as wishing them a good morning, not stating that it is a good morning. so even if it's a really shitty morning it's still a kind gesture. or you could just say hi.
