    Default Alcohol and anxiety

When I drink there's like a 50% chance that it will reduce my anxiety, and a 50% chance of increasing it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    I'm curious

I think the alcohol emphasizes the emotion you are feeling before you're intoxicated.

Then why would people drink when they're upset.

    I dunno... Good point.

Complicated explanation. Perhaps when someone is depressed they force themselves into a mindset, which represses that feeling, making them feel numb instead of actually good like adding -1 and 1 just to get 0 and then it emphasizes the numbness and not the good feeling, and the numbness is better than bad so they consider it good.

Well it depends. Different people get different reactions.

Alcohol doesn't necessarily make them numb or neutral , it makes them cheerful and excited. However this doesn't apply to everyone, it's just the desired effect. It may actually accentuate the initial affect and turn it into utter shit.

The desired effect. It does exactly what you want it too. It's like being hypnotized. You are aware of what it can do, you could control yourself, but you have a higher influence on yourself emotionally speaking because being under hypnosis allows you to be so.

I'm hypoglycemic so when I drink my blood sugar tends to sink.

This causes me to become sort of emotionally inept. So I just find everything funny when I'm drunk and that's about it.

Yeah, its a consistent mood-lifter for me, but I'm one of those silly drunks (if I was a sad or angry drunk, I wouldn't drink at all). Marijuana, on the other hand, tends to exacerbate my OCD about half the time, so I"ve basically given that up-its not worth the roulette.

There's a small chance that alcohol will make me anxious, a decent chance that it will depress or tire me, but a big chance that it will make me happy. The only time that I try to avoid it completely is if I'm already depressed. If I'm anxious, there's a good chance that it will help.

I agree(ish) in that alcohol has a better chance of making me happy. Weed makes me "normal". So if i'm already normal it does nothing, if i'm past normal in any way, it makes me normal again.
