    Default Creative thinking question!

Here's a fun question for you all.

    Why are manhole covers round?

There are some very good reasons as to why this is, but let's see if you can think of funny and creative reasons. I will tell you why manhole covers are really round later, if you haven't figured it out by then off course.

it's a troll passageway from our dimension underground/sewage system to theirs. they also keep gators as pets and sometimes they escape and we hear about it on the news.

however, i still think man hole's stink for a reason too tho lol.

A round lid can't drop through a round hole. If it was square hypothetically you could turn the lid along the diagonal of the hole and pass the lid through. This would be bad, particularly since they typically weigh 50-100 lbs.

They're also much easier to move when you do have them lifted off the hole, because you can roll it along its edge.

It's also much less expensive and time-consuming to bore a round hole than to dig another shape.

Its an evil international conspiracy. A round metal plate manufacturer has paid off all local government officials to ensure they are round, thus cornering the market (pun unintended) and eliminating competition with manufacturers of square metal plates.

    • People would be too lazy to match up corners of square covers with the corners of square holes
    • They are an embodiment of the the circle, a shape that has been revered throughout history
    • They are designed to be used as pizza pans in a pinch, especially by fictional anthropomorphic turtles who live in sewers
    • Round manholes more efficiently cover up a hole of a given area
    • The colonial government hated squares, and tradition prevails

Ease of manufacture and fit. Corners are problematical from the viewpoint of angles, sharpness, fit and so forth. With a round hole and a round cover you only need two dimensions essentially.
Isn't it time for a colourful metaphor?
