    Default Please define...

..."The Greater Good" in YOUR own words.

    No WikiPedia please...

I use this term alot, or at least think on it alot, and am interested in what others' perceptions of it are.

Thank you for any insights you are willing to share!

I shall write mine out after this meeting I have to go to.

Something that impacts more than just yourself. There's what's beneficial to me and my self interests, and then there's what impacts more people. Greater good is something that has an impact beyond my own existence.

    The Greater WHAT?
I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower. The TV was obviously on. I used to fly myself and I said, "There's one terrible pilot."

If you don't agree about my MBTI type, you can complain about it here. I've had plenty of people telling me I'm something else, in my reputation box. That's annoying.

The greater good, is a "good" that applies to the majority.

And the first thing that pops in my mind about "the greater good" is the controversy of the greater good.

How many people are worth suffering for the greater good?

How should we quantify the greater good, and the people who pay for it?

You hear this in the army a lot, from what I've seen, where propaganda is required to put a veil on the loss and the pain.

"he died for the greater good"
"he died like a hero(for the greater good)"

Some people may perceive this greater good, as an ideal, or some idealistic conduct, thinking that everybody should make their decisions considering the greater good, and the impact they have on others.

I guess this greater good is a reason, a justification, more than anything else.

Either the good of the many instead of the good of the few,
or a short-term strategic sacrifice for a long-term investment in hopes of a larger profit,
or the voice of my inner compass, mostly in moral issues.

when people say this I usually think they mean to say that something benefits a cause outside of themselves.

It implies a sacrifice in the present in order to succeed further along your path. When I read it I see "I have to sacrifice my wants for a common, collective goal."
